Board releases voting center implementation plan

Review comments, suggestions invited

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Election Board on Thursday presented a draft plan at a public meeting at the Vigo County Annex Building, detailing the implementation of voting centers in Vigo County and the use of a new touch-screen voting machine.

The installation of the new vote centers is expected to begin in spring 2014, according to a message to the public that Vigo County Circuit Court Clerk David Crockett shared at the meeting.

Replacing 56 polling places are 18 voting centers that will be open before and during election day. One voting center, the Vigo County Annex, is suggested to be open two weeks before the election for early voting.

Other locations are suggested to be open one week before the election for early voting. The 18 suggested vote centers (all of which will be open on election day) include the Vigo County Public Library, Kroger North and the National Guard Armory, among others.

“Vote centers give the individual voter the opportunity to cast his/her ballot at any Vote Center location throughout the county,” Crockett said in the message.

The system will include 140 touch-screen voting machines, 23 ballot boxes and 56 electronic poll books.

“This machine captures your vote,” said Crockett, referring to a scanner that captures the votes once they are made on a touch-screen voting machine.

The machine will allow voters to “check-in” and identify their specific ballot. After voting, a paper ballot will come out for the voter to review. The machine will also do tabulation, but no results will be presented.

The purpose of the meeting was to present the plan to the public. The board encouraged attendees to submit comments and questions (after reading the plan) in writing to the Vigo County Circuit Court Clerk at the Vigo County Courthouse, 33. S. Third St., Courthouse, first floor, Terre Haute, IN 47807. A copy of the plan can be obtained at the office.
