TERRE HAUTE — Four people face criminal charges related to an altercation Thursday morning on Wabash Avenue near 20th Street.

Detective Starla Neidigh of the Terre Haute Police Department stated in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday that the four suspects reportedly battered two people and broke into an apartment at about 4 a.m. The suspects were apparently looking for someone.

When police arrived at the scene, one victim told police that he had been attacked by two females and two men who ran into a nearby house on Kent Avenue.

Another victim told police that he had been hit in the head with a brick during the attack. That man sought medical treatment for a head injury and a shoulder injury.

Police went to the house on Kent Avenue and located Joseph Lanning Jr. and Heather Hlatko, both age 25, Malinda Chism, 26, and Cody J. Taylor, 23. Witnesses identified the suspects as the four people involved in the altercation, police said.

Neidigh said that police also found that Hlatko had left an infant inside a car about a block away from the scene. Hlatko was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent, residential entry and two counts of battery.

Lanning, Chism and Taylor were arrested for two counts of battery and residential entry. Lanning was also arrested on suspicion of resisting law enforcement.

Judge David Bolk found probable cause for the arrests and set a court date of Tuesday for filing of formal charges. Bail for Hlatko, Chism and Taylor was set for $20,000 with no 10 percent allowed, while bail for Lanning ws set at $25,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

Lanning’s case will be filed in Division 1 court where he has prior criminal cases.
