Man sentenced for 2012 home invasion

Orin Wakefield receives 8-year prison term

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man received an eight-year prison sentence Thursday as the result of his 2012 arrest for residential entry after breaking into a South Center Street house and causing a family to flee its home.

The sentence for Orin Wakefield, 43, included prison time for a case of battery on an inmate while Wakefield was housed in the Vigo County Jail.

Wakefield was charged with residential entry, a class-D felony, and interfering with the reporting of a crime, a class-A misdemeanor, in Vigo Superior Court 6.

Terre Haute Police arrested him in the 700 block of South Center after he allegedly broke into a home and trashed the house while the family was inside.

The family was reportedly able to escape the home after Wakefield, who was reported to be yelling and crawling across the floor, ran upstairs. He was tazed by police before being arrested.

Wakefield has a lengthy criminal history, including a conviction for the murder of his stepfather in California while Wakefield was a juvenile in the 1980s. He also has convictions in 1999 for battery and possession of cocaine; in 2001 for a handgun violation; in 2004 for criminal confinement, criminal recklessness and dealing cocaine. He had been released from the Indiana Department of Correction in May 2011.
