Van hits school bus, but no one injured

TERRE HAUTE — The first day of school in Vigo County also brought with it the first school bus accident Monday.

While no children were on the bus, at least two people went to the hospital after the accident, at U.S. 150 and National Avenue in West Terre Haute.

The school bus was headed north when it was struck by an eastbound van, said Franklin Fennell, school district director of transportation. The van “hit the driver’s side corner,” he said.

The school bus driver went to a hospital for observation, but not by ambulance, Fennell said. “We sent our driver to the hospital as a precaution.”

The driver was “shaken, but not injured,” said Superintendent Dan Tanoos.

Further details about the accident were not immediately available from the West Terre Haute police department, which investigated.

The accident happened in the morning.

Monday’s accident marks the second school bus accident in less than a week, with another occurring last Wednesday near Brazil; it involved a Clay Community Schools bus.

Fennell urged motorists to drive cautiously around school buses, which make frequent stops for children.
