Benefit set for man in need of heart transplant

Hereditary ills prompt need

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A benefit will take place Sunday to assist a West Terre Haute man in need of a heart transplant.

The event, A Heart for Dustin, is intended to raise funds for Dustin Weger, 26, who recently was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition.

He had open heart surgery Jan. 29 to receive an artificial heart pump, but he needs a heart transplant as soon as possible, said family friend Rhonda Knight, who has helped organize the event.

The benefit will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. — or later, if people want to stay longer —  at the Amvets Post 222 at 2420 Fifth Ave.

The fundraiser includes a spaghetti plate for $6 that comes with garlic bread and salad. Drinks and desserts are available for an extra charge.

There also will be a live auction, live bands and raffles.

The event will be open to the public, and children will be welcome.

Funds raised will be used to help offset Weger’s medical and living expenses. He must make regular trips to Indianapolis for evaluation, Knight said.

Weger had a brother who died a few years ago from the same medical condition, Knight said. Weger is engaged and has two small children.

For more information, contact Knight at 812-243-3837.
