Downtown coffee shop reopens under new ownership

Soft opening for Tater & Joe’s today and Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — A popular coffeehouse, with roots in downtown Terre Haute’s revival, has returned after a six-month absence.

Tater & Joe’s Coffee Grounds (formerly known as, simply, The Coffee Grounds) conducted a soft opening this morning and afternoon, offering free samples to visitors walking into the shop at 423 Wabash Ave. Its brick and hardwood interior, softly lit, dates back to the building’s 1890 origin. It became The Coffee Grounds in 1993 and grew into a go-to spot for java fans, from college students to retirees fond of its wireless Internet access and quiet atmosphere. It closed in September.

The shop, under new owner Kevin Hunt, will feature loaded baked potatoes, with a variety of toppings. The baked potato offerings will debut later in March. The coffee side officially opens 8 a.m. Monday, said coffee manager Michael Wilson, but the soft-opening preview will continue from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

At 6 p.m. March 7, the owner and staff will answer questions and discuss plans for the restaurant with the public, followed by a performance from the musical duo of B.G. McPike and Solly Burton.

Normal hours for Tater & Joe’s will be 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday. The shop will be closed Sundays.
