Teen receives 10-year sentence for child neglect

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute teen has received a 10-year sentence in a class-B felony child neglect case that resulted in the hospitalization of the infant victim.

Jesse James Weir, 19, appeared Thursday morning in Vigo Superior Court 3, where he was sentenced to four years on in-home detention, followed by three years on formal probation and three years on informal probation.

He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim except as allowed by the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Weir was charged after a seven-week-old infant girl was injured and hospitalized in December 2011. The case was waived from juvenile court in September 2012 when Weir was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. He was given credit for 251 days already served in the county juvenile detention center and the county jail.

The plea agreement also allows, if Weir earns an associate’s degree, for the suspended portion of the sentence to be modified to two years of formal probation and four years of informal probation.
