Gunshot victim’s father arrested

The condition of the Parke County man who was allegedly shot by his father Saturday in Parke County was labeled as “discharged,” officials at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis,  the hospital where he was taken, said Sunday.

Shane M. Smith, 37, of Lodi was found by police with two gunshot wounds — one in the face and one in his shoulder — outside a residence in Lodi on Indiana 234, according to the Parke County Sheriff’s Department.

He was first taken to Union Hospital in Clinton before being transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, police said.

Police said they then arrested the suspect — the victim’s father — Charles L. Smith, 74, also of Lodi, who was booked into the Parke County Jail on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a felony. He was being held without bond, police said.

According to a press release, Parke County sheriff’s deputies received the call of a shooting around 1:39 p.m. Saturday. After finding Shane Smith with injuries outside the residence, officers then located Charles Smith inside, police said, and discovered that the father and son had a physical altercation. Moments after the altercation, the shooting occurred, police said.

Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, Fairview Police Department, Vermillion County EMS and Cayuga Rescue also assisted at the scene.

Police on Sunday did release any other updates on Shane Smith’s condition or on the incident.
