Leaf pickup begins next week

TERRE HAUTE — The City of Terre Haute Street Department will begin leaf pickup (vacuuming) on Nov. 12, weather permitting. Workers will be making only one pass, and the pickup will begin on the north end of the city, according to a press release.

Times and routes for the pickup will be posted on the front page of the city’s website, There will also be notices sent to the local media on a weekly basis.

The street department asks residents to rake their leaves to the tree row, but not into the street, as that causes clogging in the storm/waste water sewer system.

The city also asks residents to keep leaf piles free of trash, debris and tree branches.

Terre Haute’s waste contract with Republic Services includes leaf and tree limb/branch pickup. Leaves should be bagged and placed next to the blue toter for pickup.

There is a pickup limit of 10 bags per week at each household during heavy leaf season. Limbs need to be bundled into sections 3 feet long by 2 feet wide and placed in or beside the toter. This service is restricted to non-commercial work only.

Additionally, the city will be providing leaf bags, free of charge, to local residents. The bags will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning today at the Terre Haute Waste Water Facility, City Hall and all city fire stations.
