Felony charges filed decline for Vigo in 2012

TERRE HAUTE — The overall number of felony cases filed in Vigo County courts declined from 2012 to 2011, recently released Indiana trial court statistics show.

But the number of class-A and class-B felonies had a dramatic increase — more than 50 percent for the “A” felonies alone.

Vigo Superior Court 3 Judge David R. Bolk said Monday that in comparing the 2012 county court statistics to 2011, he sees no obvious patterns among the cases filed in the county. But the number of serious felonies filed did jump significantly, as did the cases involving Children In Need of Services, or CHINS.

The court data come from the Indiana Judicial Service Report, produced annually by the Supreme Court’s Division of State Court Administration. The data provide details about court operations at the county and appellate level. The report can be found at www.in.gov/judiciary/admin/3118.htm.

The number of murder cases filed in Vigo County has increased by one each year from 2010 when three new cases were filed. In 2011 there were 21 class-A felony cases filed, but in 2012 that number jumped to 45. The number of class-B felony cases also rose from 164 in 2011 to 200 in 2012. However, the number of class-D felonies dropped from 1,134 filed in 2011 to 1,045 filed in 2012.

Bolk pointed out a significant increase in the number of CHINS cases. In 2010, 110 new cases were filed. That grew to 181 cases filed in 2011, and jumped to 266 new CHINS cases in 2012. On the flip side, the number of juvenile delinquency cases dropped from 290 in 2011 to 246 in 2012.

The number of mortgage foreclosures also showed a slight uptick in 2012, when 394 new cases were filed. In 2011, 355 new foreclosures were filed. Bolk said that while the number there grew, it is still below the record-high filings that the county experienced in 2005 to 2007.

Another statistic that the judge pointed out was the number of protective orders filed — 582 in 2011 compared with 691 filed in 2012.

In an overall look at the number of criminal, civil, juvenile and civil violations filed, Vigo County experienced a increase from 32,559 new cases filed in 2010, to 34,349 new filings in 2012.
