Man dies in gun incident

Alcohol consumption, ‘fooling around’ preceded fatal shot

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a man’s death as a result of what is believed to have been an accidental shooting that occurred late Saturday night in a northern Vigo County apartment, authorities said.

The shooting victim’s name is being withheld until the conclusion of an autopsy, police said.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said Sunday deputies responded around 10:43 p.m. Saturday to the apartment complex in the 8700 block of  North Raintree Court in Otter Creek Township “on the report of an accidental gunshot wound.”

A tenant told deputies he and friend had been drinking alcohol, and that they had been “fooling around,” firing a handgun outside the apartment.

“The tenant went on to say that a short time later both men were inside the apartment, when the victim accidentally shot himself,” a Sheriff’s Office release said. “The tenant immediately dialed 911 and remained on scene for police to arrive.”

The victim was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Cottom said.

An autopsy is pending later in the week by the Marion County Coroner’s Office, authorities said.

No one was taken into custody, police said, and the apartment tenant, whose name is not being released, was cooperative.
