TERRE HAUTE —
Meijer is considering locating a store on Terre Haute’s east side, at the northeast corner of New Margaret Drive and Indiana 46/U.S. 40, an official with the Vigo County Area Planning Department has confirmed.
“Meijer is considering locating a store there,” said Darren Maher, acting director of the planning department. The proposed site on the east side of Indiana 46/U.S. 40 consists of about 25 acres.
On Nov. 6, the Area Plan Commission will consider a rezoning for a small portion of the property a Meijer would occupy. It also will consider a subdivision for a platted lot, Maher said.
The rezoning, from open space (O-1) to a commercial zoning (C-3), also would have to be approved by the Terre Haute City Council.
Having a major anchor store such as Meijer would likely spur more development in that area, Maher said.
The goal, if everything goes smoothly, “is to have everything ready to where Meijer could start building a store” early next year, if it chose, he said.
Meijer has its headquarters in Grand Rapids, Mich.
