Victims of truck-train crash identified

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities have released the names of three people who died as a result of a collision between a train and a pickup truck early this morning in northeastern Vigo County.

Those killed were vehicle driver Brian J. Rickard, 30, and passenger Ryan Lee Cook, 24, both of Terre Haute, and passenger Ashlee Taylor Pugh, 20, of Dennison, Ill., according to a news release from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

The pickup truck crossed in front of the a train about 2 a.m. at the railroad crossing at Rio Grande Avenue and Gallagher Road south of Fontanet in Nevins Township. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsies were pending as of late this afternoon. The investigation is continuing and, based on evidence found at the scene, it is believed that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

All warning signals and gates were functioning normally at the time of the crash, according to the news release. All warning lights on the train were also functioning. All pertinent data from the train’s “black box” has been downloaded for review, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

More information on the crash will be provided as it becomes available.

The Indiana State Police and the Nevins Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. The crossing is again open to traffic.
