NeighborWoods sessions on trees, plants set for this month

TERRE HAUTE — Several local flora-related activities are planned this month in connection with “National NeighborWoods Month.”

Every October, tens of thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to celebrate NeighborWoods by planting more than 45,000 trees across North America, according to a news release from Sheryle Dell, Terre Haute’s urban forester.

The city is teaming up with community partners Clark-Landsbaum Deming Park Holly Arboretum, Terre Haute Association of Realtors, Terre Haute Parks Department, Terre Haute Department of Redevelopment, Terre Haute Street Department, TREES Inc., United Cerebral Palsy of Wabash Valley and Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity for several activities throughout October.

Volunteers can take part in one or more of the scheduled activities.

• Limbing-Up project (tree pruning): Sheridan Park, 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Contact Jim Nasser for more information at 812-239-1028.  

• Holly Arboretum (cleanup): Deming Park, 9 a.m. Oct. 19. Contact: Sheryle Dell at 812-244-4923

• TREES Inc. Big Tree (walking tour): Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 Contact: Dave Shields, contact

• Tree planting in 13th Street neighborhood (Hulman Street to Cruft, 13th to 14th streets): Signin 8:30 to 9 a.m. Oct. 26; planting demonstration, 9 a.m. T-shirts for the first 100 volunteers; goodie bags for the kids; refreshments provided. Contact: Sheryle Dell at 812-244-4923

• Invasive honeysuckle (removal): Dobbs Park, Signin, 8:30-9 a.m. Oct. 26; pull, 9 a.m. to noon; refreshments available.
