Laying new ground: Park improvements continue on Hawthorn trails

TERRE HAUTE — Hawthorn Park is having its unpaved trails improved. More than five miles of walking trails are having low areas filled with stone, then a mixture of small stone and agricultural lime is being packed down. The cost of the project, expected to be completed next week, will be no more than $7,000.

“It has been at least 10 years since this was done at Hawthorn,” parks superintendent Kara Kish said before Monday’s Park Board meeting. “It should be done every six to seven years.”

Hawthorn Park has nearly two miles of paved trail, which is considered handicap accessible. The parks department is also using GPS marking to map out trails at the park and get exact mileage of trails to be maintained, said Adam Grossman, assistant park superintendent.
