Sunday crash kills Terre Haute man

Greene County man arrested on DWI charge

SPENCER — A Terre Haute man has died and his wife remains critically injured after a head-on crash Sunday in Owen County that resulted in the arrest of a Greene County man on felony drunken driving charges.

Keith Fennell, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on Indiana 67/U.S. 231 about one mile south of Spencer.

His wife, 41-year-old Jennifer Fennell of Terre Haute, was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. She remained in the neurocritical care unit as of Tuesday afternoon.

Cory Deschamp, 22, Jasonville, was arrested on charges of class-C felony causing death when driving while intoxicated, class-D felony causing serious bodily injury when driving while intoxicated, and the class-A infraction of driving without financial responsibility.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Department reports that Fennell’s 1995 Plymouth van collided with Deschamp’s 2001 Chevrolet pickup, trapping the Fennells in their vehicle.

Deschamp declined medical treatment and was taken to Bloomington Hospital for a blood test. He was booked into the Owen County Jail on Sunday, and he appeared in Owen Circuit Court on Monday for an initial hearing. Bail was set at $20,000, and surety bond was posted.

Hearings for Deschamp have been set for October and February, with a trial date of March 5, 2014.
