Driver dies in demo derby

Cayuga — Authorities report that a demolition derby proved fatal for an Illinois man Saturday night.

According to a media release issued by the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, Gary L. Littlejohn, 27, Oblong, Ill., was pronounced dead at Union Hospital in Clinton after participating in a demolition derby in Cayuga Park.

The incident reportedly occurred about 5:49 p.m. Saturday at the derby, which was being sponsored by the Cayuga Fire Department, according to the sheriff’s department.

Littlejohn was reportedly a contestant in the “The Battle at the Border” event. According to the release, the pickup truck he was driving rolled over onto its top and crushed the roof, trapping him inside. Cayuga Fire and Rescue extricated him from the vehicle. He was reportedly transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m.
