TERRE HAUTE —
A judge has found a Terre Haute man incompetent to stand trial in the 2012 murder of his wife.
Robert E. Spitler II, appeared Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Judge David Bolk heard testimony about Spitler’s mental health and ruled him incompetent to assist in his defense.
Bolk ordered Spitler sent to a state mental health facility for treatment. The judge also set an Oct. 7 trial date in the case.
Spitler was arrested in September 2012 after he called 911 to report that he had stabbed and killed his wife. When officers arrived at the home in the 4400 block of South Eighth Street, they entered the home and found Shawn Singhurse Spitler, 50, lying on her back in a bedroom. She had multiple stab wounds to her chest. An autopsy determined that she died from those stab wounds.
Spitler was undergoing mental health treatment at the time of his wife’s death.
