BRAZIL — A Clay County man is facing felony charges on suspicion of forcing a woman into his pickup truck and touching her inappropriately several times.

The man, identified as Edward Eugene Smith, 46, Brazil, is accused of forcing the woman into his truck as she walked along Jackson Street in Brazil on her way to the Clay County Courthouse, according to a Clay County Sheriff’s Department’s news release issued Wednesday.

Smith is accused of then driving the woman to Terre Haute, touching her repeatedly and making sexual comments to her. The woman told police she feared for her life and was worried Smith would hurt her if she attempted to flee the truck, according to the release.

Later, Smith drove the woman back to the Clay County Courthouse where he entered the building with her and remained at her side until the woman somehow indicated to courthouse staff she needed help, police stated. At that point, Smith left the courthouse and entered his truck.

The woman was able to provide police with a description of the suspect and his truck, and Smith was stopped a short time later east of the courthouse. After an investigation, Smith was arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident, according to the news release.

Smith is facing felony allegations of criminal confinement and sexual battery. He was booked into the Clay County Jail on Monday on $100,000 bond, no 10 percent allowed.
