Shane R. Porter of Dugger identified as drowning victim

Man last seen Feb. 8; body recovered from Wabash April 1

The body of a man found in the Wabash River near Mount Carmel, Ill., last week has been identified as 36-year-old Shane R. Porter of Dugger, who had been missing for two months, Indiana State Police said Tuesday.

An autopsy was conducted in Vincennes by forensic pathologist Dr. James M. Jacoby, who used dental records. The deceased was identified by Wabash County, Ill., Coroner Larry Hodgson as Porter.

Hodgson listed the preliminary cause of death as drowning, pending toxicology results.

Porter was last seen at his residence at about 5:15 p.m. Feb. 8. Family members reported Porter missing to Indiana State Police after he failed to report for work in Vincennes later that evening or to contact relatives.

Around 8:50 p.m. on the evening Porter was last seen, a man was spotted swimming in the Wabash River on the south edge of Vincennes. A 911 call to Vincennes police from a bystander resulted in specially trained and equipped Indiana Conservation officers being called in to search the river by boat. The body was recovered on April 1.

Porter’s car was found abandoned on Feb. 10 in a Vincennes public parking area near Memorial Bridge.

Indiana State Police Putnamville District and Indiana Conservation officers spent two months investigating Porter’s disappearance. They employed hundreds of man hours, as troopers, detectives and crime scene investigators conducted interviews, gathered physical evidence and traced the final steps leading up to Porter’s disappearance.

Indiana Conservation officers assisted with search parties, conducted interviews and patrolled numerous miles of the Wabash River over several days looking for signs of Porter.
