Riley rodeo promotes kids’ bike safety

RILEY — One after another, Vigo County kids peddled their bicycles through orange safety cones while obeying traffic signs in the sixth annual bike safety rodeo at Riley Elementary School on Saturday morning.

Firefighters from Riley, Seelyville and Honey Creek teamed up with bicycle officers from the Indiana State University Police Department to teach the kids about obeying road signs and how to safety navigate a bike through tight turns and spaces.

In all, 35 children in grades K-5 from Honey Creek, Lost Creek and Riley townships took part in the rodeo, which was launched in 2008 following the death of a Vigo County youngster killed while riding his bike on a Terre Haute street.

All of the children’s bikes were checked for properly functioning chains, brakes and inflated tires. The kids were also given a variety of safety and fire prevention materials and each child was entered into a drawing to win a free, new bicycle.

The Riley Fire Department’s annual Bicycle Rodeo is a free event that takes place in the south parking lot of Riley Elementary School.
