TERRE HAUTE — St. George Orthodox Church at 1900 S. Fourth St., Terre Haute, will celebrate its Good Friday service at 7 p.m. today (May 3) and its Easter service at 9 p.m. Saturday. The Agape (Love) service will be conducted at noon on Sunday.

The Orthodox Church continues to base its calculations for the date of Easter on the Julian Calendar, which was in use at the time of the First Ecumenical Synod, thus celebrating Easter at a different time than other Christian churches. The date of the celebration of Easter for western Christians is based the Gregorian Calendar, according to an Orthodox Church news release explaining the variance.

Orthodoxy is the oldest Christian Church in Christendom — the worldwide community of Christians. Orthodoxy is second-largest body in Christendom with 225 million people worldwide, with 6 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The Terre Haute community is invited to join St. George Orthodox Church in the Holy Week services.
