Rising Dough: 100 Men Who Cook event raises $127K for Children’s Museum

TERRE HAUTE — A lot of great food was served up Saturday night to ensure another strong year for the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.

The museum’s 100 Men Who Cook fundraiser in Hulman Center raised $127,000 this year, far more than expected, said Lynn Hughes, museum executive director.

“It’s definitely more than we’ve raised in past years,” Hughes said Sunday. “It’s way above-and-beyond what we had hoped.”

About 100 men brought their best recipes to the event this year, including 29 who have participated since the fundraiser began in 2009, Hughes said.

“It was all about the chefs,” Hughes said. “We know it’s a commitment for those guys.”

The top money-raiser at the event was Chris Davies, whose dish was in the salad category. Davies raised $10,778, Hughes said.

Other top money-raisers were Rick Burger in the appetizer category, Dwayne Owens for his dessert, Barry Martin for the main dish, Richard Shagley for his side dish and Bill Osborn raised the most money in the soup category.

“We could not have this event without them,” Hughes said of all the chefs, of whom more than 40 raised at least $250 for the downtown museum.

The money raised will help the museum continue to provide exhibits, scholarships, school programs and special events for kids in the community, Hughes said. In the five years since the fundraiser started, 100 Men Who Cook has raised more than $500,000, she said.

Among other things, the money raised will help fund the Imagination Station, a new exhibit at which kids are encouraged to build, create and explore through various hands-on activities, Hughes said. Coming up next month, the museum is hosting a Fairy Tale Ball on all three levels, including a palace, pirate ship and forest, she said.

The 100 men who prepared enough food for 20 people each, provided enough delicious food to guarantee a great evening for another sold-out crowd, Hughes said. The chefs’ hard work and commitment helps make special moments of discovery and wonder at the museum possible for young people, she said.

“That makes it all worthwhile,” Hughes said of watching children discover and learn new things at the museum. “This place definitely brings kids a lot of joy.”

The 100 Men Who Cook event was sponsored by Old National Bank, Clara Fairbanks Foundation, Frontier Communications, Thompson Thrift and Vectren. Special auction items — including a Ford truck and a Dixie Chopper — were donated by Wolfe’s Auto Auction and Complete Outdoor.
