Weekend fire destroys Parke County home

ROCKVILLE — A fire destroyed a home in Rockville over the weekend, causing the death of several house cats.

The fire started around 7:10 p.m. Saturday, said Chris Schlee, who co-owns the Parke Bridge Motel on Ohio Street – also Indiana 36 – in Rockville.

Schlee and a friend where headed to the Main Street Rockville Cruise In Motorcycle, Scooter and Bike Show when they noticed black smoke from the rear of the home and rushed to the doors to alert anyone inside.

No one was home, and soon the Rockville-Adams Township Fire Department arrived to begin a lengthy battle with the blaze. The one-and-a-half-story home was a total loss, Schlee said, adding that firefighters remained on the scene until about 1 a.m.

Schlee’s wife, Shara, managed to rescue six cats, but several died in the fire, Chris Schlee said. Some kittens were taken to a nearby veterinarian clinic and were revived, he added.

It was not immediately known what caused the fire. Officials with the fire department were unavailable early Sunday evening for the latest information.

The destroyed home was next door to the Parke Bridge Motel, which is about two blocks east of the square in Rockville on Indiana 36.
