Vigo’s tire amnesty initiative Monday through May 2

Residents must call for appointment

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Health Department Vector Control is being proactive in the fight against West Nile Virus — and is asking the public’s help.

A tire amnesty initiative begins Monday and continues through May 2. Vigo County residents need to schedule an appointment to drop off old, unused tires (with or without rims). Dropoffs can occur 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There is no cost to drop off up to 10 tires, but proof of residency is required. Semitrailer tires, tracker tires or larger tires must have pre-authorization. Without authorization, a charge will occur.

This is for residents only; businesses, tire retailers, salvage yards, auto service centers or trucking companies are not allowed to participate.

Tires are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which carry the West Nile Virus. Proper disposal of tires will reduce the spread of the virus in Vigo and other surrounding counties, the health department said.

For more information, pre-approval questions or to schedule an appointment for tire dropoff, call the Vigo County Health Department Vector Control at 812-462-3289.
