Vermillion County Jail passes annual state inspection

NEWPORT — The Vermillion County Jail has passed its annual state jail inspection, and Sheriff Bob Spence has released statistics about the operation of the jail and sheriff’s department.

“We passed with flying colors,” Spence told the Tribune-Star. “We do every year.”

The Indiana Department of Correction conducted the annual jail inspection on March 14. The report covered several areas such as fiscal management; training and staffing; information systems with inmate records; physical plant; safety and sanitation; personal hygiene; medical services; diet and food preparation; and security, control and supervision of inmates. The jail has had no death investigations and no major disturbances.

The jail was constructed in 1993 with bed space for 73 inmates. There are 12 cell block areas and a fenced outdoor recreation area that has been changed to meet higher security standards.

New cameras and hard drives have been installed, along with a video arraignment system that is being used by the jail and courts.

The 2013 statistics show that:

• 1,973 court documents were served from Vermillion and other counties or states.

• Inmate bookings totaled 506 in 2012 and 649 in 2013. Of those in 2013, 478 were men, 171 were female. The totals include inmates serving weekend commitments, court sentences and DOC inmates housed locally.

• In 2013, 379 arrests were made by the sheriff’s deputies. Other arrests logged were 21 by the Indiana State Police, 108 by Clinton Police and 11 by town marshals.

• A total of 9,099 calls were received by communications officers in 2013. That includes all fire, ambulance and deputy requests.

Spence said that most arrests made in the county are drug- and alcohol-related.
