Man arrested on multiple burglary charges

Pawn shop database, gun sales lead police to suspect

TERRE HAUTE — A Montezuma man has been arrested in connection with residential burglaries in Parke and Vigo counties and on suspicion of illegal sale of firearms.

Zachary Shane Kramer, 28, faces charges of burglary and receiving stolen property in connection with a Feb. 18 burglary at a residence in the 9000 block of Greencastle Road in northeastern Vigo County.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department said Kramer is also a suspect in Parke County burglaries that occurred in the same area and around the same time as the Greencastle Road breakin.

Taken from the home were 11 firearms, including several rifles and shotguns, along with an Xbox game system, handheld game controllers and video games.

Cottom said that deputies checking a database of items pawned at area pawn shops located the Xbox game system and video games after they were sold to a local business on U.S. 41 in Terre Haute. Detectives looked up the identity of the person who sold the Xbox items, and learned that it was Kramer.

At about the same time, the Parke County Sheriff’s Department received information that Kramer had sold several firearms to a gun dealer in Rockville.

The guns were identified as being taken in the Feb. 18 burglary in Vigo County. However, an AR15 assault rifle and a pistol taken in the breakin were not recovered among the guns sold to the dealer.

Kramer has a history of unrelated criminal convictions that includes theft, battery by bodily waste and sexual misconduct with a minor in Marion County, and of intimidation in Parke County.

Those convictions led to the filing of a habitual offender charge in Vigo County, along with the burglary and theft charges related to the Feb. 18 incident.

While Kramer was being held in the Parke County Jail, a bond of $60,000 has been set in the Vigo County cases. It was unknown Monday afternoon when Kramer would appear in Vigo Superior Court 3 on the local charges.
