Larry Russell denied bond reduction request

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute father’s request for a bond reduction was denied Wednesday in Vigo Superior Court 1.

Larry Russell, 40, had petitioned the court to lower his bail, set at $100,000.

In November 2012, a teenager found wandering in the city told police he had escaped from the Russell residence where he and his siblings had been confined in their rooms without food, water and sanitary facilities. Police investigated and found evidence that the children in the home had been tied up with duct tape at times, beaten and locked in a bedroom.

On Wednesday, Judge John Roach denied the bond reduction request and affirmed an Oct. 15 trial date for Russell, who has been charged with 11 criminal counts, including neglect of a dependent, criminal confinement and battery, relating to foster and adoptive children who resided in his home in the 1600 block of North 12th Street.

In July, Roach also denied Russell’s request for a change of venue for the case.

The defendant’s wife, 36-year-old Nikki Russell, was also arrested and charged with 14 criminal counts, including neglect of a dependent. Her bail is also set at $100,000. Her next court date is Aug. 16.
