United Way collecting school supplies

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley students will be returning to school soon, and United Way of the Wabash Valley wants to help make sure as many as possible have the supplies they need, the agency said in a press release.

United Way — in partnership with the Vigo County School Corp., Clay Community Schools, Southwest School Corp. and the South Vermillion School Corp. — is hosting its fifth-annual school supply drive called “Stuff the Bus.”

“Stuff the Bus” challenges residents of the six counties the United Way of the Wabash Valley serves to donate new classroom necessities for local students. All supplies collected from the event will be given to the participating school corporations to distribute to students in need.

“School officials tell us that children routinely show up to school without the basic tools they need to do their school work,” said Troy Fears, executive director of United Way of the Wabash Valley. “United Way is committed to ensuring that all of our children have access to the basic foundation they need to succeed in school. …”

Those choosing to donate can watch for a school bus parked outside these donation locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following dates:

• Today — Sullivan Walmart

• Tuesday — Terre Haute Walmart, U.S. 41 South

• Aug. 14 — Big Lots on Fort Harrison Road

• Aug. 15 — Terre Haute Walmart, Indiana 46

Items sought include: backpacks, pencils and pens, composition paper, crayons and colored pencils, construction paper, glue and glue sticks, pencil cases, scissors, erasers, binders, rulers, book covers, toothpaste and toothbrushes, adhesive bandages and art pads.

For more information on items to donate or to make a monetary donation, contact Fears at the United Way at 812-235-6287 or email troy.fears@local.unitedway.org.
