Greencastle Council seat will remain vacant for now

GREENCASTLE — The Greencastle City Council is still waiting to learn the appropriate next step in dealing with one of its members who is facing federal allegations of civil rights violations while in his role as a Putnam County deputy.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the council heard a prepared statement from its president, Adam Cohen, concerning Councilman Terry “T.J.” Smith, 37, who represents the city’s Fourth Ward.

Cohen said he first learned of the allegations against Smith when he was contacted by the Terre Haute media on Monday.

His one-page statement was on behalf of all the council members present Tuesday night, Cohen added, although other council members had not assisted in its preparation.“While these charges have nothing to do with his job as a City Council member, it is important to remember that elected officials, government employees and especially those that are granted enforcement powers have an added responsibility to act with the public’s best interest in mind,” Cohen said.

As for the “decision on who sits in the seat of the Fourth Ward council chair,” that “will have to wait,” he stated. “In the next few weeks we hope to have more information and a clearer understanding of the appropriate next step.”

Cohen added that all members of the council stand ready to work with residents of the Fourth Ward on any issues they wish to present.

“I think that was very well said,” stated councilman Mark Hammer, after Cohen finished reading the one-page statement, which was then made available to the news media present and the public.
