Girl Scouts begin annual cookie sale

TERRE HAUTE — Troops of girls wearing the green sashes and vests are now accepting orders for the famous Girl Scout Cookie Program across the Wabash Valley.

The annual cookie sale begins today, with six cookie varieties on the order cards.

This year, the price per box has increased to $4, with more proceeds going toward programming.

“Girl Scouts of Central Indiana started in 2007, and we haven't seen an increase in cookie prices since we merged five smaller councils together,” said Deana Potter, chief communications officer for GSCI.

"So this is the first year in eight years that we have had a price increase. By raising the price we are able to get more money for troop program services," she said. The price has held steady for the consumer during those eight years, despite price increases from the bakery, which were absorbed by the cookie sale program.

Girl Scout cookies come in six varieties, including the standard Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Trefoils. This year’s special cookie is Savannah Smiles.

GSCI serves for than 40,000 girls in 45 counties across central Indiana, including Clay, Greene, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties.

The former Covered Bridge Council – which included Vigo, Clay and other counties in west central Indiana – merged into the Central Indiana council. Terre Haute retains a service center and showcase with Girl Scout programming, supplies and resources. Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912,and cookie sales have been an integral part of the Girl Scout experience since 1917.

Cookie delivery begins the week of Feb. 3, and orders can be taken through mid-March.

Girl Scout cookies may be ordered directly from participating Girl Scouts, by calling toll-free 855-472-4648, or by visiting
