TERRE HAUTE —
A judge found probable cause for Tuesday’s arrest of a rural Brazil man accused of attempted murder for allegedly shooting at a Fontanet man.
Brent L. Cooley, 46, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Wednesday morning where Judge John Roach set no bond for Cooley and ordered that formal charges be filed by Tuesday.
Detective Jason Fischer of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department testified that investigators have determined that Cooley went to Fontanet looking for a man with whom he had a dispute. After finding that man’s father at a tavern in Fontanet and agreeing with the father not to fight with the other man, Cooley was led to the man’s residence. However, words were exchanged between the men and witnesses report that Cooley exited his vehicle armed with a handgun and fired at the alleged victim. The victim’s cheek was grazed by the bullet and he fell to the ground.
Witnesses reported that Cooley threatened other people with the handgun before fleeing the scene and going to an area business where he later turned himself in to police.
Fischer said Cooley has no state-issued permit to carry a weapon and no criminal history.
