Search continues for suspect in bank robbery

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities are still searching for the suspect of the bank robbery at Old National Bank on the south side of Terre Haute that occurred Saturday morning.

According to a news release from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, police are looking for a suspect described as a white male between the ages of 40 and 50, a height of 5-feet, 6-inches to 5-feet, 8-inches tall, weighing between 140 to 160 pounds. The suspect was wearing blue jeans, gray T-shirt, tan ball cap and dark sunglasses, according to authorities.

It is believed that the suspect may have been marked with an exploding dye pack and should be marked with red dye, police said. The suspect possibly left in a vehicle, police said.

Official said that a red dye bag  was placed with the stolen money. The bag is designed to explode after it reaches a certain distance from the bank.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department said the bank robbery occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday, when a suspect, wearing what appeared to be a surgical-type mask, entered the bank with a gun described as a small silver handgun.

Police said that no injuries were reported during the robbery, but there were several customers inside the bank, including a young child.

Police said the suspect demanded money, and the staff at the Old National Bank branch at 4675 S. U.S. 41 cooperated with the suspect’s demands. Then, the suspect fled the bank through a rear door, police said. The alleged robber fled west from the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, authorities said.

A search of the area by deputies and Terre Haute Police and K-9 units did not locate the suspect, police said.

The FBI is also involved with the investigation, police said.
