Four teens arrested after fatal car crash Wednesday

TERRE HAUTE — A motorist died early Wednesday after he crashed a stolen vehicle along Miami Gardens Road in eastern Vigo County, police said.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department identified the driver as 19-year-old Jesse Kelly, who died after being partially ejected from the vehicle, which rolled over on him in the crash.

The vehicle Kelly was driving rolled onto its top after sliding off the road and down an embankment, coming to rest against a tree in the 6800 block of Miami Gardens Road, Sheriff Greg Ewing said.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos told the Tribune-Star that the identity of the victim will be confirmed with dental records. An autopsy will be conducted today.

Sheriff’s detectives determined that there were several other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Those occupants fled the scene before deputies arrived at about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Three of the occupants were juveniles, ages 16 and 17. They were arrested on the misdemeanor charges of passenger leaving the scene of an incapacitated driver, criminal trespass and minor consuming alcohol. All three juveniles were taken to the Vigo County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Also arrested was Michael S. Collier, 18, who faces the same charges as the juveniles. He was booked into the Vigo County Jail and was held without bond. He is to appear in Terre Haute City Court this morning.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen moments before the crash, and that witnesses reported that the vehicle was occupied by several people.
