Homecoming safety program

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University will provide Designated Walker and SoberRide programs Saturday to help keep students safe and encourage responsible drinking during Homecoming festivities and The Walk.

This is the third year for SoberRide, which will provide free transportation in the campus area for students returning to apartments or residence halls.

SoberRide will have two 20-passenger buses providing safe rides from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

ISU students who are concerned about driving themselves or riding in a car with another driver who may have been drinking can go to marked stops along Wabash Avenue to board a shuttle.

Students will need to show their ISU student ID card to use the service. This is a one-way ride home for students within Terre Haute. The service is not a shuttle to bars and parties. Students are limited to one one-way ride per night.

Dropoff locations include 11th and Spruce streets (Sycamore Apartments); 6 1/2 and Elm streets (University Village); Fifth Street at ISU (Lincoln Quad); Fifth Street at ISU, Lot 11 (Hines, Jones and Sandison halls); Fifth Street at ISU, Lot 9 (Mills and Rhoads halls).

In addition to having beverages provided by Pepsi and food provided by local merchants, Designated Walkers undergo Step Up training, in which they learn alcohol awareness and bystander intervention techniques.

Both programs are the result of a partnership between the Student Counseling Center, Student Health Promotions, ISU Police, Campus Community Alcohol Coalition, Pepsi and the Dean of Students office.

In addition, ISU’s Office of Student Health Promotions has been educating students about Indiana’s Lifeline law, which provides immunity for the crimes of public intoxication, minor possession and minor consumption to students who contact  law enforcement while seeking medical assistance for another person suffering from an alcohol-related health emergency.
