TERRE HAUTE —
A Terre Haute man faces a charge of child neglect after a police pursuit early Saturday morning.
Michael Scott Harvey, 24, is scheduled to return to Vigo Superior Court 6 on Wednesday for filing of formal charges. He was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, resisting law enforcement, receiving stolen property and reckless driving after police said they found him hiding with a small child near his residence on Dahlen Avenue.
Terre Haute Police report that at 2:32 a.m. Saturday, an officer saw a 2002 Oldsmobile Alera fail to stop at the intersection of 11th Street and Fort Harrison Road. The driver also failed to signal a turn at 13th Street and Fort Harrison, so the officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver sped off, and the pursuit traveled through North Terre Haute in the area of Terre Town and along Lafayette Avenue.
An officer later found a vehicle abandoned in the 1900 block of Dahlen Avenue. A passerby told police that the driver had taken a small child from the vehicle and fled south.
A K-9 officer was called to the scene to track the suspect, and he was found with the child hiding behind a small outbuilding.
Police reported that the child was shivering and wet when Harvey was arrested, and the child was placed in the custody of child protective services.
Police also found that the car Harvey had been driving displayed license plates that had been reported stolen, and that Harvey’s driver’s license has been suspended.
He was being held in the Vigo County Jail without bond.
