TERRE HAUTE —
All lanes of Interstate 70 in Vigo County are now open — as of 4:15 p.m. — after multiple crashes shut down the eastbound lanes temporarily this afternoon.
However, some traffic backup is still occurring on National Avenue eastbound out of West Terre Haute.
Savvy motorists avoided Interstate 70 and Third Street (U.S. 41) this afternoon as traffic was rerouted due to an eastbound crash at the three-mile marker of the interstate.
Major Jeff Fox of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department told the Tribune-Star at about 3:30 p.m. that emergency crews were hopeful that one lane of the eastbound interstate would reopened soon, allowing some traffic to stay on I-70.
However, passenger vehicles were being taken off I-70 at the one-mile marker where old U.S. 40 splits from the interstate. Those vehicle were being sent to Darwin Road and taken back south to the interstate to continue eastbound.
However, semitrailer traffic wes being routed onto National Drive (formerly U.S. 40) to continue through West Terre Haute to U.S. 41, then taken south to return to Interstate 70.
