Homeowner interrupts intended burglary, police say

TERRE HAUTE — A homeowner likely interrupted an intended burglary early Friday, but in the process, the homeowner was attacked and injured by the suspect.

At 2:47 a.m., police were called to a home in the 1900 block of East Davis Drive where a 36-year-old man declined medical treatment for minor cuts to his arms and abdomen.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department said that the victim told deputies that he went outside to a dark area on the west side of his property to shut off his air conditioning unit and to smoke a cigarette. At that time, he was attacked by an unknown male subject with a small knife or other cutting device. The victim was injured while wrestling with the subject. The only description of the suspect was that he is about 5-feet, 10-inches tall wearing a dark T-shirt and stocking cap.

The suspect fled the scene. A K-9 unit from the Terre Haute Police Department was summoned, and the suspect was tracked eastbound from the scene, but he was not located. A small box cutter was located during the track, but the victim was unable to identify it as being the weapon that was used against him.

The victim was examined at the scene by medical personnel from the Honey Creek Fire Department.

Anyone with information about the investigation can call an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 812-238-STOP.
