Pipe breaks in ISU dorm, flooding 25 rooms

TERRE HAUTE — A sprinkler line burst in Indiana State University’s 12-story Rhoads Hall on the seventh floor Tuesday, affecting students in about 25 rooms.

A handful of students were relocated within university housing that night so crews could go in Wednesday morning to perform additional clean-up, but most students were able to remain in their rooms, said Dave Taylor, ISU media relations director.

Some students had damage to electronic devices such as laptops as well as ruined  textbooks. Residential Life was working with the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Information Technology to assist those students.

As of Thursday afternoon, three students had requested help from OIT for laptop problems resulting from the broken water line, Taylor said.

The university does not reimburse students for damages to books, laptops, etc., Taylor said. “We encourage students to purchase renter’s insurance or to make sure their parent’s homeowners insurance includes coverage for their residence hall room. This information is shared during New Student Orientation and during move-in,” Taylor said.
