Ministry hosts teen suicide presentation; announces call for actors

TERRE HAUTE — Innovative Anointed Ministries in Terre Haute is hosting a presentation Saturday, Feb. 15, on teen suicide, and how people should not be afraid to speak out and help save lives among their peers.

“Speak Life — Show Love” begins at noon Saturday in Saints Home Church of God In Christ at 2210 N. 13th St.

Presenters will discuss how lay community members can be more comfortable with responding to a person at risk, whether they are a parent, teacher, friend or someone who works with teens in an organization.

The ministry also will present the production on teen suicide and alcoholism “Do Me Right” at 7 p.m. on April 11 and 12 in University Hall Theatre at 401 N. Seventh St. on the Indiana State University campus.

Auditions for “Do Me Right,” a dramedy (drama and comedy) by Jerry J. White, are scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 17 and 18, in the first floor classroom of Rhoads Hall at 401 Chestnut St. on the ISU campus.

The play is about a church full of members who have unresolved life issues. When the anchor of the church dies the members try to cope with the loss, but while preparing for the funeral everyone’s issues are exposed.

In addition to the following actors, volunteers are needed for the positions of stage manager, makeup artists, sound technician and crew members.

Robert Williams (40-50 years) — Pastor of Do Me Right Church, husband and father — in that order. He is a man who struggles with taking care of his family because he is so busy taking care of everyone else. When he loses a very prominent member of his church he is forced to learn what’s really important.

Clara Williams (late 30s, early 40s) — Robert’s wife. She is striving to see her family succeed while working through family issues.

Shaun Williams (16-18) — A young man who is an all-star basketball player, whose reputation is riding on the big game. He is a preacher’s kid who is not happy at church or home. As issues unfold around him he is forced to keep it together through it all.

Tiffany Armstrong (15-18 years) — A young woman being raised by her uncle because her parents are no longer around. While looking to fill void in her life, she finds herself pregnant and trying to deal with the consequences of her and her boyfriend’s actions.

Tulip (20-30s) — Head usher at Do Me Right. She is dealing with anger and hurt from her husband leaving her, but takes her pain out on others in the form of verbal attacks and gossip.

Tina (20-30s) — Usher at Do Me Right, a good-hearted person who tries to see the best in others. She often finds herself caught in the midst of Tulip and Tiny’s gossip, though, where she attempts to turn the conversation back positive. Tina also has self-esteem issues because of her weight.

Tiny (20-30s) — Usher at Do Me Right and a huge people-pleaser who follows whomever is leading, whether good or bad.

Deacon T. Jones (50-60s) — The head deacon and bodyguard. He is an old-school man with an odd taste for exotic foods. He is funny, but serious about what he believes.

Mother Mary Aline (70-80s) —The sweet church mother who is an example of what love really is. Even in her sudden death, her presence is not diminished among the church members.

Fred Day (late 30s, early 40s) — The assistant pastor at Do Me Right. He is a man of dedication and conviction. He wants to do things the right way. He is a husband who doesn’t feel respected in his home or his church.

Wilma Day (30-40s) — The wife of Fred and a woman dealing with hurts from her past.

Alawishes James, “A.J.” (30s-40) — The former pimp, who is misunderstood. He is faithful to Do Me Right and lives by the Bible now, but is still judged for his mistakes. He loves helping others.

Extras: Three ushers and friends at Do Me Right, who talk about others as well as each other.

The following are cameos (one to two short appearances):

Bishop Better (50-60) — A guest minister that loves Mother Aline and expresses how she has influenced his life even to this day. He uses his past to speak life into a hard situation.

Lady Better (40-50) — Wife of Bishop Better, she doesn’t speak but sings a song for the church.

Lora (teen) — Classmate of Shawn, follower of Pete.

Pete (teen) — Classmate of Shawn, class clown, antagonist.

Jordan (teen) — Classmate of Shawn, follower of Pete.
