TERRE HAUTE — A Jasper businessman will seek the Democratic nomination for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tom Spangler announced his candidacy Thursday. He is the only Democrat so far seeking his party’s nomination in the spring primary. The filing deadline is Feb. 7.

In a news release announcing his candidacy, Spangler said he wants to use his small business experience to cut federal spending and strengthen the economy.

The 8th District seat is currently held by Rep. Larry Bucshon, a Republican from Newburgh who is seeking re-election. Bucshon is completing his second two-year term in Congress.

Spangler owns L.U.I. PLUS, a marketing and distribution company of quality commercial furniture in Jasper.

“I’m running because since 2012 Congress has only gotten more reckless and irresponsible and Congressman Bucshon is part of the problem,” Spangler said. “I’m looking forward to talking to voters about how I plan to take my business experience to Washington to cut out of control Washington spending and help our small businesses create jobs for Hoosiers.”

Spangler moved L.U.I. PLUS to Indiana in 2002. Today, it has customers throughout the United States and several foreign countries.
