UPDATE: United Day presses on through frigid temps

TERRE HAUTE — Frigid temperatures thoughout the Wabash Valley may be affecting donations to United Day for United Way, which continues until 7 p.m.

As the 12-hour push to raise $20,000 in one day continued, some volunteers said the temperature — which held steady in the teens for most of the day — may have kept people from venturing outside.

“Unfortunately, with the cold weather, I don’t think we saw as many people as we normally would,” said J. Gumbo’s owner, Jeff Habermel, of his lunchtime crowd at the downtown eatery.

One customer, Indiana State University student Zhen Sun, told the Tribune-Star that he visited the restaurant knowing about the United Day event. He has volunteered for the Live United effort that involves the community in the not-for-profit agency.

Participating restaurants have agreed to donate a portion of their profits from meal sales today to the United Way.

Dylan Riggen of the United Way didn’t have a running total on contributions so far, but he agreed with Habermel’s assessment that the cold weather has kept potential donors indoors and away from local businesses and collection sites.
