Motorists encountering slick roads, multiple collisions

TERRE HAUTE — Wind and snow have caused numerous vehicle slide-offs and accidents in Vigo County, the city of Terre Haute and along Interstate 70 since 7 a.m.

“There are multiple crashes and slide-offs on Interstate 70 from the 1-mile marker all the way to the 50-mile marker,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts, who was working an accident between a semi and a car at the 1-mile marker. He said no injuries resulted from that accident.

“The biggest [crash] was at the 23-mile maker with multiple passenger cars and multiple semis,” Watts said. That incident near the Brazil exit does not have serious injuries, he said.

Also, a semi dump truck rolled over at the 30-mile marker with entrapment, but the driver is not injured, Watts said. A passenger was ejected from a vehicle at another rollover at the 50-mile marker, but again, no serious injury, Watts said.

“All the of the injuries this morning appear to minor,” he told the Tribune-Star about 9:30. “The interstate system is very, very slick. That is the problem, wind and being slick.”

Jeff Thomas, dispatcher for the Vigo County Central Dispatch Center, said between 12 and 15 vehicle slide-off have occurred on city and county roads since 7 a.m. “The majority are in the county. It is very slick out there,” Thomas said.

The National Weather Service forecasts between 1 and 2 inches of snow accumulation today. The chance of snow on Friday is 40 percent.
