Rain barrels offered for sale

Composting bins also available

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for 55-gallon rain barrels.

The cost per barrel is $65. Colors available are: blue, black, gray and terra cotta. The barrels come with a screen to keep mosquitoes from breeding inside.

According to a press release: “Rain water is naturally softened water which makes it great for plants, auto cleaning and window washing. It is also chlorine free, which helps maintain a healthy biotic community in the soil.

“Rain barrels collect rain water and store it for when you need it. It will save you approximately 1,300 gallons of water during the summer months. Saving water helps the environment, saves energy and money.”

The soil and water conservation district is also taking orders for tumbling composters. They are 55-gallon barrels, in black only, and the cost for them is $120.

The composter comes on a stand, is easy to turn, and includes a center tube that aerates the compost and allows excess moisture to drain out. Steel bars on the inside break up the compost and fluff it for better aeration. In the Midwest it takes about four weeks to completely compost the material in the barrel.

The barrels are recycled food barrels, manufactured by Upcycle Products. They are guaranteed for five years. The barrels were used to ship pickled food. The terra cotta barrels come from Greece and have had olives shipped in them. All barrels are food quality, high-density polyethylene barrels. You can visit their website at upcycleproducts.com to view the products.

The barrels may have scuff marks on them because they are used, according to the press release, and if the buyer encounters a problem, a new barrel will be supplied.

If there is a problem with your barrel after purchase we will supply you with a new barrel.

Contact the Soil and Water office to order barrels. Orders will be taken until Aug. 1. This will be the final order for 2014.

The Soil and Water office address is 3241 S. Third Place in Terre Haute.

The office is located in the USDA Service Center in Honey Creek West behind the mall. CAll 812-232-0193, extension 3.

Buyers can pick up their barrels at Wabash Valley Fairgrounds from 1 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 7.
