Thomas to resign as Indiana’s inspector general

INDIANAPOLIS — The only person to serve as Indiana’s top ethics watchdog since the position of inspector general was created in 2005 is planning to leave.

David Thomas tells The Indianapolis Star he plans to remain on the job for at least several months, but that he’s interested in working as a special prosecutor and providing legal advice to a private college.

He didn’t name any potential employers, but said he believes he could get such jobs.

Thomas, a former Republican Clay County prosecutor, said he doesn’t believe the jobs he’s interested in would violate Indiana’s conflict-of-interest and post-employment rules, but he’s seeking a formal opinion from the State Ethics Commission, which meets Thursday.

The position was created by Mitch Daniels when he became governor to serve as a watchdog against fraud and abuse in state government.
