500 gallons of milk donated to balance kids’ summer meals

Seller makes large dairy donation to foodbank

TERRE HAUTE — A 500-gallon milk donation arrived at Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank on Monday, as Prairie Farms donated “moo juice” as part of the Great American Milk Drive.

The 125 cases of milk will be distributed among the 95 member agencies in seven counties that receive food from the Terre Haute foodbank.

“During the summer months, when kids are out of school, they may not receive enough food,” said Jennifer Buell of Catholic Charities. “Milk is a big part of development, so in addition to our member agencies, we are working with 11 summer feeding sites where milk is a big part of their lunch programs.”

The 500-gallon donation from Prairie Farms was a first for the Terre Haute foodbank. Area residents are also invited to make contributions to the milk drive by going online to www.milklife.com/give, or by text messaging “Milk” to 27722.

Donations start at $5, and can be designated to the local Feeding America food bank by providing a zip code with the donation. The donations will result in vouchers for milk that will be given to families who visit a food pantry.

According to Feeding America, hunger impacts one in six Americans, including 16 million children who lack access to nutritionally adequate food. Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank is a certified affiliate of Feeding America, the national foodbank network. The Terre Haute foodbank provides 2.5 million meals each  year to people in Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties through 95 member agencies and 18 mobile food pantries.
