Four new deputies join Vigo Sheriffs Department

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing swore in four new deputies on Friday. The six-month long hiring process included physical agility screening, aptitude testing, psychological testing, extensive background check and polygraph examination.

The four new deputy sheriffs:

• Michael Ellsworth is a former four year veteran employee of Vigo County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division. He left the office in August of 2010 to pursue a career as a deputy sheriff with the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office. As a deputy sheriff he was promoted to the position of K-9 handler and served as a member of the District 53 Methamphetamine Suppression Team. Michael left the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office in 2013.

Ellsworth is a 2002 graduate of Wawasee High School in Syracuse, Ind., and he attend Indiana State University and is a 2011 graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

• Ryan Hartleroad has worked for the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division since May of 2013. He is a lifelong resident of Vigo County, graduating from Terre Haute North Vigo in 2007 and attending Indiana State University. His studies at ISU focused on criminology/criminal justice, graduating in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree.

• Mary Parmer has worked for Vigo County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division since December of 2010. She was recently promoted to the rank of corporal and served as a second shift jail supervisor.

She moved to Terre Haute from Winamac to attend Indiana State University. She focused her studies on criminology/criminal justice and worked as a student community service officer for the ISU Police Department. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree and is currently continuing her education at ISU.

• Jerrad Pirtle, a lifelong resident of Sullivan, currently works as a firefighter for the City of Sullivan. Prior to that he served as a fulltime patrol officer for the City of Sullivan Police Department. He is a 2009 graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and currently serves as a reserve officer for the City of Sullivan.

He is a 2003 graduate from Sullivan High School and a certified Emergency Medical Technician and has had extensive training in dealing with hazardous materials.
