Vigo Fair event, entertainment lineup set

TERRE HAUTE — Rodeos, drag racing, baking, horse shows and much more will be featured at the 2014 Vigo County Fair beginning July 6.

“The Fair Board has worked very hard to bring in quality family entertainment events during the Vigo County Fair,” stated Jennifer Cook, Wabash Valley Fair Association President in a press release.

The grandstand entertainment events will kick off with IPRA Championship Rodeo, followed by the demolition derby taking up two days: Monday and Saturday. The Voice of the Valley will take place Tuesday shadowed by bakers best contest auction. Ending the week is a new event, all motor drag racing, on Thursday and pro truck and tractor pulls Friday.

“If you want to come out and see who has the fastest truck, get involved with our Thursday event,” Cook said. “We’ll even have motorcycles race. We’ll put anything against anything.”

Aside from the grandstand events, 4-H shows will continue in this year’s fair.

“4-H teaches people to be responsible, and not procrastinate,” said Sarah Hudson, 2013 fair queen. “We’re a big family here.”

Due to last year’s rule change on how old the ladies had to be to run for fair queen, Cook said they will be implementing a “princess pageant” for 14, 16 and 17 year olds starting next year.

Mary Ann Sedletzeck, a 4-H leader who has been going to the fair from age 9 in 1964, said she looks forward to helping the kids.

“We’ve had kids who would finish 4-H and go to college to become very successful socially and professionally,” she said. “A lot of them come back and attribute their success to 4-H and want to enroll their children in it.

Cook said the Exhibit Hall has a spotlight for 4-H winners.

“A kid steps into the hall wondering what the fence with lights shining on it was,” Cook said. “He says ‘I want to be inside the fence.’”

Title sponsoring this year’s fair is First Financial Bank. Day sponsors are TSC Tractor Supply Co. on Sunday, Harrison College on Monday, WTWO on Tuesday, followed by Terre Haute Chevrolet on Wednesday, Indiana National Guard Thursday, Duke Energy on Friday and Cooperative Action Network on the last day.
