Suspect back to face charges in homicide

Fourth in alleged meth deal robbery extradited from Florida

TERRE HAUTE — A fourth suspect in a May 28 homicide near downtown Terre Haute has been extradited from Florida and appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Wednesday.

Alex Hallett-Miles, 26, is being held in the Vigo County Jail with no bail allowed.

He was transported from Putnam County, Fla., where he was arrested June 13 on a warrant for felony murder and class-A felony robbery resulting in serious bodily injury related to the homicide of Steven Vicars-Goings.

Vicars-Goings’ body was found near the intersection of Fifth and Swan streets on May 28 after a witness reported seeing Vicars-Goings falling off the side of a swerving pickup truck and being run over.

An autopsy determined that he died from multiple head and chest trauma.

Hallett-Miles told Judge Michael Lewis during the video hearing that he is trying to hire an attorney to represent him in the homicide case. Lewis gave him until July 7 to have an attorney hired, and set a 1:30 p.m. hearing for that day so that Hallett-Miles can request a public defender if necessary.

According to court documents, Vicars-Goings’ death was the result of a conspiracy to commit robbery. THPD Detective Julia Dierdorf reported that on May 28, Cody Morgan drove his truck — with passengers Ashley Lynch, Joston Pentzer and Hallett-Miles — to a location on Fourth Street to meet Vicars-Goings to purchase drugs. Lynch, 21, of Linton, told police that the group had decided to take the drugs from Vicars-Goings then drive away without paying for them, according to those documents.

When that scenario played out, however, Vicars-Goings reportedly grabbed onto the truck and would not let go for several blocks, according to court documents. Lynch stated that Hallett-Miles was “lying in the back seat kicking Steve in the head and kicking his hands, trying to get him off the truck.”

The incident began in the 600 block of South Fourth Street. After a few blocks, Vicars-Goings did fall off the truck and was run over by the vehicle, according to documents.

Morgan, 22, of Terre Haute, told police that after the incident, he was scared and drove to his house. Lynch and Morgan were arrested May 30, while Pentzer, 22, Montezuma, was arrested in Parke County.

Pentzer told police that the day after the incident, he purchased a bus ticket to Florida for Hallett-Miles and dropped him off at the bus station.

Terre Haute police were contacted by an informant, who advised that the wanted man was in Hawthorne, Fla.
