Spice use, erratic driving yield arrest, police say

Vehicle swerving, moving slowly

CAYUGA — A Fountain County man was arrested over the weekend on allegations of driving under the influence of synthetic marijuana, also called “spice.”

A little before noon Saturday, several motorists called 911 to report an erratic driver going south on Indiana 63 in Vermillion County near Cayuga. Indiana State Police Master Trooper Jeremy Lewis was in the area and quickly located the vehicle, a 1983 blue Mercedes, according to an ISP news release.

When discovered, the vehicle was going 49 mph in a 60 mph zone and had several vehicles following it, according to the release. Drivers were honking and pointing to the Mercedes when they saw the state police trooper, it states.

Lewis observed the vehicle, driven by Brian A. Wolf, 23, of Veedersburg, traveling off the road onto the shoulder and also left-of-center, according to police.

When stopped, Wolf was allegedly in possession of three empty packets of spice, two full packets and also drug paraphernalia. He showed classic signs of intoxication, according to police.

Wolf is facing allegations of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving and possession of spice, which the common name for a variety of herbal mixtures designed to simulate the effects of marijuana.

Also responding to the incident was Vermillion County sheriff’s deputy Mike Strader.
